Hot Dipped Galvanized Carriage Bolt:  The carriage bolt has a round head with a square neck under the head, see photo below, and is made from low or medium carbon steel with a hot galvanized finish applied.  The square neck is designed to keep the bolt from turning as a nut is tightened.  Most commonly used for connecting wood structures, the carriage bolt does not typically need to have a tensile strength rating higher than Grade 2.  Hot dipped galvanized carriage bolts provide anti-corrosive protection to the fastener, and is typically used with treated lumber installations.  The length of a carriage bolt is determined by measuring from under the head of the bolt to the base of the threads.
